Valve Tags

Pipe Marking Valve Tags

Pipe Valves, actuators, and transmitters seldom have surfaces on which a label can be applied. Instead, valve tags are used to provide a flat surface for the label. The plastic tag is then attached to the valve using a plastic or metal tie.

Pipe Marking Valve Tags - Pipe Marker Pipe Tag

When should Valve Tags be used?

 •  If the Surface area cannot accommodate the label size
 •  If Congested area results in obstructed view
 •  If Labels cannot adhere to surface
 •  If Labels frequently changes or are in cycles or rotations
 •  If Labels cannot conform to uneven surface
 •  If Surface has a temperature higher than 160°F

What Information Should Be Included on Valve Tags?

There is no defined standard for valve labeling, which gives some flexibility as to what type of information can be put on a valve tag. Use what best fits the work area, facility, or company standards.

Many valve tags often have the following:
 •  Pipe Contents
 •  Valve Identifier
 •  Bar Code
 •  Serial Number
 •  Valve Function
 •  Normal Position of the Valve
 •  Type of Valve Actuator
 •  Right-To-Know Information

A valve tag should at least include the valve identifier and a description of what the valve does. The valve identifier can also be represented by using a bar code in addition to alphanumerical characters. Since there is limited space on the tag, abbreviations are typically used.

Here are some examples of abbreviations you may see used on valve tags as defined by the ASME Code.

Creating Your Valve Tag

Whether you need valve tags, pipe markers or general OSHA safety signs, the DuraLabel PRO does it all at huge savings compared to other labeling systems. The included templates make printing pipe markers and valve tags a snap. You can also print directly from popular software packages such as EasyPower, SKM, and others.

• Common practice is to use all capital letters when labeling. When trying to fit information on a smaller surface, legibility is much more important. Use a combination of upper and lower case for your text and either arial or verdana.

• Because a valve tag can move, valve tags are typically made with the same information on both sides of the tag allowing the information to be read from any angle. Some facilities will include Right to Know (RTK) information on one side.

• Two of the most common valve tag sizes are: 2.25" x 3.75" and 3.375" x 4.75". They come in either rigid or flexible materials. A rigid valve tag is made by applying a vinyl label to a rigid plastic backing which produces a durable, rugged tag. A flexible valve tag is made by using a material such as DuraTagT stock.

• When it comes to choosing a color, it should follow the pipe marking color standards. To get a list of these colors, request a free copy of the FREE Valve Tag best practices guide from Graphic Products.
