Medical Pipe Marking

NFPA Standsrds for Medical Facilities

The National Fire Prevention Association's "Standards for Health Care Facilities" NFPA 99 standard establishes labeling requirements for gas systems in medical facilities. Compliance with NFPA 99 is required for a hospital or facility to receive accreditation from the Joint Commission.

NFPA 99 requires all pipes carrying medical gasses, including Oxygen, Vacuum, Medical Air, Nitrous Oxide, Nitrogen or Carbon Dioxide, to be permanently labeled with their contents, direction of flow, and pressure. The text of the label must be at least 3/8" tall and run parallel with the pipe.

Labels must appear in the following locations:

  • At intervals of 20' or less
  • At changes of piping direction
  • Before and after barriers
  • On access doors to enclosures containing piping, valves, or other medical gas components.

Valves and cylinders on pipes containing medical gas must also feature labels that indicate the pipe's contents, direction of flow, and pressure. Shut-off valve must carry an inscription that states "Do not open or close valve except in an emergency."
